CAPITOL EXTENSION’S LAST UPDATE

On Jan. 27, 2026, the Phoenix City Council decided to re-evaluate high-capacity transit options for west Phoenix, prioritizing the proposed West Phoenix corridor along Indian School Road and deferring the Capitol Extension (CAPEX) project. Valley Metro will exit project development and the Capital Investment Grant process for the CAPEX project.

As directed by the Phoenix City Council, Valley Metro will advance planning for the West Phoenix corridor. Comprehensive community engagement will be central to this work, ensuring Valley Metro hears from residents, business owners, and stakeholders along the corridor as solutions are developed to serve the needs of west Phoenix.

Valley Metro will work closely with the City of Phoenix on project development and begin coordinating with partners at the Federal Transit Administration to explore funding opportunities. We appreciate the Council’s thoughtful consideration of transit options to best serve west Phoenix.
